NEWS: The Region That Has No Big Banks (NBB) has undergone a dramatic change in leadership following a turbulent six weeks in office for Prime Minister Gine Caruttiva. Elected on 8 June, Gine Caruttiva resigned on 3 August ahead of the conclusion of a citizen-led recall referendum.
The referendum, which was still in progress at the time of Gine Caruttiva's resignation, ultimately saw 86.4% of participating citizens vote in favour of removal from office.
The recall effort began with a joint statement issued on 28 July by 22 signatories, including the Deputy Prime Minister, several ministers, MPs and citizens. The statement accused Gine Caruttiva of overstepping constitutional powers, acting unilaterally in foreign affairs and targeting political opponents. Specific allegations included:
-
Ordering monitoring of a political rival immediately after the election
Removing committee members without ministerial consent
-
Forcing a minister to take an unwanted leave of absence
-
Blocking a podcast guest over personal disputes
-
Making inflammatory remarks toward a treaty ally, Europeia, and resisting calls to apologise
-
Demanding government members delete accounts on an unrelated website
The signatories argued these incidents represented a pattern of governance contrary to the cultural focus voters had endorsed, instead generating “Gameplay Foreign Affairs drama” and damaging the region’s reputation.
In his resignation statement, Gine Caruttiva acknowledged mistakes, saying they 'poured fuel into fires' which should have been avoided and admitted to becoming 'entangled in what I swore to avoid — drama, conflicts, and gameplay politics.' Gine Caruttiva expressed hope that the groundwork laid for cultural initiatives and constitutional reform would be continued, and announced plans to take a break from regional politics.
Deputy Prime Minister Okona has now assumed the role of Prime Minister. In a message to the region, The Democratic Disney States, Minister of Community Affairs, wished Gine Caruttiva well and offered full support to Okona, noting optimism about the region’s future.
Attention now turns to the upcoming election for Deputy Prime Minister. Five candidates - Flomonga, Namojia, National Coraland of Fishery, Prov and Sera Valle - have declared their intentions, with voting scheduled for later in August.
The leadership change marks one of the most significant political shifts in NBB’s recent history, with members now looking to rebuild trust and refocus on the region’s stated cultural priorities and Deputy Prime Minister election.
