NEWS: Voting is currently underway to recall 4 of the 9 members of Thaecia's House of Commons after a successful petition was presented by Vindar to recall these MPs from office.  The MPs in question are Gudetamia, Blake Lavare, Netriala and Great Minwas.  This attempt comes after a high degree of political unrest and another recent recall where the Republic of Aiyland, a former member of the House of Commons, was successfully recalled 25-1 for inactivity.  The effort has ignited passionate debate with the region split on whether or not to recall these members.

Thaecia's constitution provides for a unicameral parliament where at least 9 members are elected by the region's citizens, to the House of Commons.  A recall can be initiated against any member of the House of Commons, known as MPs, if a petition signed by 12 citizens is presented to the Electoral Commissioner.  The current petition received the required signatures within 27 hours and is now before Thaecia's citizens for a vote.  The petition states, as its reason for initiating the recall:

'Recognizing the recent concerns of an insufficient, inactive, and controversial House of Commons which does not properly represent the citizens and residents of Thaecia, and furthermore acknowledging that a recall of the entire House would prove unnecessary and far too overreaching as there are members of the House whom have dedicated themselves to the nation and conducted themselves in a respectful manner to both the citizens of Thaecia and Thaecian Democracy.'

Thaecian's have expressed both support and criticism for the current recall effort.

Many who support the recall point to the inacitivty of the members in question and the circumstances around the MPs obtaining their seats.  Because there was no competition for seats, all 9 MPs were appointed to their positions.  Further claims of chaos and mismanagement by current MPs have fueled accusations of a lack of democratic representation and accountability.

Others have suggested the current partial recall does not go far enough and are instead calling for a full recall of all MPs in the House of Commons.  Another recall petition, authored by Marvinville, which has received 9 out of the required 12 signatures (as of writing), is calling for a full recall.  The petition states:

'This house has largely been inactive, and some of those who have been active have fueled the chaos and mismanagement of this House of Commons.  There wasn't even an election for this House of Commons, and this region deserves an election to determine the future of Thaecia instead of the current path of chaos we are following.  By signing this petition, you are supporting democracy in this region, and to end the drama from this mostly inactive House of Commons.  Its time to get back on track and to elect a Parliament that will do good for Thaecia.'

Cosmosplosion, a supporter of the full recall effort, has suggested in a statement on the RMB that citizens vote 'no' on the current partial recall proposal and vote 'yes' on a later proposal for a full recall:

'Vote NO on the recall currently up to vote!  Thaecian Patriots are presently working to recall the ENTIRE House as it was ILLEGALLY ELECTED.  Voting down this recall effort will prevent unnecessary work from our election administrators and less confusion among voters... VOTE NO NOW! VOTE YES LATER!...'

Others have expressed hesitation and opposition to the recall efforts.  Gudetamia, one of the MPs subject to the recall and Cultural Affairs Minister has express that despite the accusations, they are active and have been publically advocating for a 'no' vote.  Great Minwas, another MPs subject to the recall has stated that the majority are members of the Commonwealth Party, implying political bias in the petition.

As of writing, the region is evenly split with a 14 voters in favour of the recall and 14 voters against.  Despite the even split in voting, public opinion is broadly in favour of a recall.  The main disagreement is whether all MPs or only those listed in the current vote should be recalled.

The NationStates Times will continue to monitor and provide updates on the situation in Thaecia.
