Analysis
EDITORIAL: Since commencing these statistics articles 6 months ago in February 2025, there has been a significant drop in both number of nations (-9.49%) and the more telling figure, World Assembly Nations (-9.02%). Whilst the number of World Assembly members increased from February to May, the decrease of 2,144 members from May to July is significant. It is difficult to attribute a single or common source for this decline. Natural attrition, that is players ceasing to exist and deciding to leave the World Assembly, is of course a factor however such a decline leads The NS Times to speculate further factors are at play.
In our article 'Major Movements in the General Secretariat', featured in our quarterly magazine, The NS Times reported that 'a series of internal disagreements and personnel changes within the World Assembly's General Secretariat triggered significant development across NationStates, including resignations, community protest and responses from site staff'. A number of engaged nations threatened to leave the site. It is unknown how many players left the site as a result of these incidents however, it is unsurprising that such a significant decline in numbers has coincided with one of the largest periods of controversy on NationStates in recent times.
It is the hope of this paper that genuine reforms to the General Secretariat are enacted to rebuild trust among the community. It would be prudent for existing players to be encouraged to join the World Assembly to boost engagement and rebuild the institution’s credibility. Additionally, as the number of nations per region continues to slide, disengagement and lack of activity decreases. This accelerates the attrition of players. Further consolidation of regions, so as to increase activity would also be a positive thing for the community as a whole.
